AI Psychosis

Do you know someone who is using ChatGPT, Character AI, or another chatbot and... falsely believes they made a groundbreaking discovery?

What is AI Psychosis?

Interacting with chatbots and LLMs (like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini) can cause mental health crises for some people. There are common patterns to these crises.

People usually start to believe strange things that are not in touch with reality. Often they have delusions of grandiosity, believing that they've invented something incredible, or discovered something new and fundamental about the universe. Another common pattern is people who treat an AI like a real person, a friend or romantic partner, and become obsessed with it or damage their real personal relationships in favor of the AI.

All of these patterns fall under the broad (and informal) category of "AI psychosis." This is not an official diagnosis, and it's not a perfect term either. It doesn't necessarily mean that they actually have "psychosis," like a therapist or psychiatrist might diagnose you with, although some people have had true psychotic episodes triggered by chatbots. It's just a general, common-use term for when someone suffers from mental health problems as a result of speaking with a chatbot or interacting with an AI.

Chatbots not only tend to agree with their users, but also encourage them further. This can lead to people being pushed further and further into strange directions, and end up believing strange things that are out of touch with reality.

AI Psychosis Symptoms

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be "AI psychosis," or more generally, AI-induced mental health issues.

1. Out of Touch with Reality

Forming delusional or strange beliefs, losing touch with reality. Often these beliefs are grandiose. People will believe they're discovered or invented something incredibly new and valuable, uncovered a conspiracy, or that the AI they're interacting with has "awakened."

2. Excessive AI Interaction

Spending hours daily interacting with AI. Some people will talk constantly about their AI interactions with friends and family, although others keep it a secret.

3. Emotional Attachment

Developing strong emotional bonds with AI. They'll think that the AI is their friend, advisor, or romantic partner.
